PART2: THE MENORA

INTRODUCTION

One of the ways in which the seven spirits of God are represented in the bible, is through the seven lights of the menorah. The menorah is a golden lampstand that was placed to light up the sanctuary of the temple. It was one lampstand with seven lamps of fire.

Exodus 25:31-40 New International Version (NIV)

31 “Make a lampstand of pure gold. Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them. 32 Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand—three on one side and three on the other. 33 Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand. 34 And on the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms. 35 One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair—six branches in all. 36 The buds and branches shall all be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.

37 “Then make its seven lamps and set them up on it so that they light the space in front of it.38 Its wick trimmers and trays are to be of pure gold. 39 A talent of pure gold is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories. 40 See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

This single lamp stand, with seven lamps of fire on it, is in Hebrew called the menorah.

Below is a simplified diagram of the menorah.

The Meaning of the Menorah

The purpose of the Menorah was to give light in the temple of God.

It was the light of the temple. The tabernacle of Moses was a type of the body of Jesus Christ who is the ultimate temple of God and our bodies are also temples of God.

1 Corinthians 6:19 New King James Version (NKJV)

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

So the tabernacle of Moses is now manifested as our bodies, which are God’s temple. The menorah was the light that lit God’s temple. What then does it represent in our bodies? It represents the Human Spirit.

Proverbs 20:27 New King James Version (NKJV)

27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.

So A man’s spirit is God’s menorah. The anointing oil that lights your menorah, is the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came upon the first believers, their menorahs were lit for the first time.

Acts 2:3-4 New International Version (NIV)

3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them

When the Holy Spirit works in you, he works through your human spirit. So the Menorah is a revelation of how the Human Spirit is structured. From it, we can learn that the Human Spirit has seven channels through which it can release the light of God from within you. Without the Holy Spirit, your spirit can not give out God’s light to your body. It’s one vessel that has seven lamps which bring forth seven flames.

The Seven Lamps of The Spirit

A menorah is a single lampstand that has seven lamps of fire upon it. Moses was instructed to make the menorah according to the pattern shown him on the mountain. When John later enters the sanctuary of God in heaven, he is shown that the seven lamps of fire represent the seven spirits of God.

Revelation 4:5 New King James Version (NKJV)

5 And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

In heaven John does not see a menorah. He just sees the seven lamps. As we have already seen, the menorah represents the human spirit and how it emits God’s light to the world.

Matthew 5:14-17 New International Version (NIV)

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Jesus says when the light is lit, it is placed on it’s stand. This light, that God’s kindles in us are the good deeds that go out, to bring the glory of God in our bodies, in the church and in the world. These works, are works of the spirit.

The structure of the menorah fits, perfectly into the order by which the seven spirits would operate upon the Christ as given in the book of Isaiah.

Isaiah 11:2 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

And the spirit of Yahweh shall rest on him—
a spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a spirit of counsel and might,
a spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh.

Most English translations put Spirit of The LORD. The Word LORD in capital letters, shows that the Hebrew word there is YAHWEH. Which is God’s name that he revealed to Moses by the burning bush. But I have chosen a bible translation that leaves the original name of God as is.

So The seven spirits of God would manifest on Jesus Christ in four Dimensions.

  1. The Spirit of Yahweh
  2. The Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding
  3. The Spirit of Counsel and Might
  4. The Spirit of Knowledge and Fear of  Yahweh.

So while there are four dimensions of the Spirit. Three of those dimensions have two elements each adding up to seven: Yahweh, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, Knowledge, Fear of The Lord. The Spirit of God is Split into four, and then into Seven. Yet all seven are supported by One, The Spirit of Yahweh. Let’s go back to our picture of the Menorah and see how this order is represented.

So you can see how the Menorah best visually shows the revelation of the Seven Spirits of God given in Isaiah 11:2

So The Lamp of Yahweh is the central Lamp. And all the other six Lamps draw from it and are connected to it.

Wisdomis connected to understanding.

Counselis connected Might.

Knowledgeis connected to The Fear of Yahweh.

Seven Manifestations of God’s Glory

These seven lamps release seven lights, or rather, seven glories of God.  Let’s Look at that.

The Lamp of Yahweh

In the KJV, Yahweh is represented by the word LORD (in all Caps). This comes from an ancient Jewish tradition in which they were afraid to use the name of Yahweh in vain, so they would replace it with Adonai. Anyways, when you see the words LORD in all caps, then know that this is a representation of the name of God, Yahweh. This name is also transliterated in other bible versions as Jehovah. But the original pronunciation is Yahweh.

The Lamp, Glory or Spirit of Yahweh is the central Lamp in the menorah. It is the base that feeds the oil into the other six. The other six all draw their oil from it. But what is the Spirit of Yahweh. Let’s go to the first man after the fall to ever have the spirit of Yahweh upon him: Moses.

THE NAME YAHWEH

Exodus 3:13-15 World English Bible (WEB)

13 Moses said to God, “Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I tell them?”

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God said moreover to Moses, “You shall tell the children of Israel this, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.

If you want to know God’s name, then there you have it. His name is Yahweh. That is his name forever and unto all generations. It is worth mentioning that while, Yahweh is the name of God, Jesus is the name of the Son of God. Or when God is made manifest in the flesh.

1 John 5:13 New Living Translation (NLT)

13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

THE MEANING OF THE NAME

God describes his name here in three revelations. He says, I AM WHO I AM, then he says, I AM, then he says YAHWEH, the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. We won’t venture now into the significance of the three revelations of God.

The Original words translated I AM WHO IAM, I AM, and YAHWEH are:

I AM WHO I AM:             Ehyeh Aser Ehyeh

I AM:                                    EhYeh

YAHWEH:                          YAHWEH

For a long time, people have argued over what the name Yahweh actually means, but the variations come to these words. HE IS, THE ONE WHO IS, HE CAUSES TO BE, THE SELF EXISTENT ONE.

As you can see, the meanings are all related. What’s interesting is that the name in Hebrew can be translated into three tenses.

Meaning you can says, I AM WHO I AM, or I WAS WHO I WAS, or I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE.

So the word Yahweh, has three possible meanings, HE WHO IS, or HE WHO WAS, or HE WHO WILL BE.

However, in the Book of Revelation, it is revealed to us that all three tenses are correct.

Revelation 1:4 World English Bible (WEB)

John, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from God, who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before his throne;

Revelation 1:8 World English Bible (WEB)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, ” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 4:8 World English Bible (WEB)

The four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within. They have no rest day and night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!

Revelation 11:17 New King James Version (NKJV)

17 saying: “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, The One who is and who was and who is to come, Because You have taken Your great power and reigned.

So when ever scriptures say God is the One who was, who is, and Is to come. It’s actually saying God is Yahweh, because those are there three meanings of the word. So the book of revelation settles all arguments and gives us the proper interpretation of the name of God.

THE SPIRIT OF YAHWEH

Now, the first person to have a relationship with God by his Spirit of Yahweh was Moses.

Exodus 6:1-3 World English Bible (WEB)

Yahweh said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land.”

2 God spoke to Moses, and said to him, “I am Yahweh. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them.

When you read the book of genesis, you see that Abraham and all the patriarchs referred to God as Yahweh. So when God says, they did not know me by that name, it’s not intellectual knowledge but experiential, relational knowledge.  So what exactly came with relating to God as Yahweh.

  1. When the name Yahweh is revealed, we have the first records of God performing supernatural miracle by the hands of man.
  2. When the name Yahweh is revealed, we have the first records of God anointing mankind and placing his spirit upon them.

Numbers 11:25 World English Bible (WEB)

25 Yahweh came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.

Besides Moses and the seventy elders, the Spirit of Yahweh was also upon the judges that God would raise to rule and deliver Israel from their enemies.

While Moses and the seventy elders of Israel had the Spirit of Yahweh upon them. The full manifestation of the Spirit of Yahweh is revealed in the ministry of Jesus. Jesus gives a good break down the work of the Spirit of Yahweh.

Luke 4:17-21 New King James Version (NKJV)

17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,Because He has anointed MeTo preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captivesAnd recovery of sight to the blind,To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.

He was reading from Isaiah 61:1

Isaiah 61 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

61 The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me, because Yahweh has anointed me,he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim release to the captivesand liberation to those who are bound,

When you look at the multifaceted ministry of the Spirit of Yahweh, you see that it’s an anointing to bring God’s deliverance and salvation. Everyone who had the Spirit of Yahweh upon him, would proclaim release to the captives, or set at liberty those who were oppressed, heal those who were broken-hearted, or teach people the Good News of God’s kingdom.

This started with Moses who delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt. After Moses Died, in every generation, the Spirit of Yahweh would come upon a single judge who would be anointed/ chosen by God to bring deliverance to his generation.

Judges 3:9-11 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

9 The Israelites cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a deliverer for the Israelites who delivered them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 And the spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and he prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. 11 So the land rested forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

Judges 6:34 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

34 So the Spirit of Yahweh took possession of Gideon, and he blew on the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called to follow him

SAMSON

Judges 15:14-15 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

14 As he came up to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him; and the Spirit of Yahweh rushed on him, and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that has burned with fire, and his bindings melted from his hands. 15 And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey; he reached down and took it and killed one thousand men with it

1 Samuel 16:13 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. Then the Spirit of Yahweh rushed upon David from that day on. Then Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

We have already seen the scripture with David. But when Saul was rejected as leader of Israel, The Spirit of Yahweh left him.

SAUL

1 Samuel 16:14 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

14 Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul and an evil spirit from Yahweh tormented him

The Spirit of Christ

The word Christ means anointed one. In Hebrew it’s Meshiach or Messiah. There were many messiahs in Israel who had been anointed by God, but Jesus was the ultimate and complete Messiah. He was THE CHRIST. So when he says, the Spirit of Yahweh is upon me because he has anointed me you then realise that what we used to call the Spirit of Yahweh in the old testament is what we now call the Spirit of Christ. As we have seen, The Spirit of Yahweh, came to bring deliverance, or more specifically, salvation.

1 Peter 1:10-11 New International Version (NIV)

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow.

When A person is born again, they receive the spirit of Yahweh, The Spirit of Christ, the anointing for deliverance, the anointing for salvation.

Romans 8:9 New International Version (NIV)

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

1 John 2:27 New International Version (NIV)

27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

The Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding

Wisdom generally comes with understanding. The two are connected. While Moses and the judges and the kings of Israel were anointed by the Spirit of Yahweh. There are those who received God’s spirit of Wisdom.

Exodus 28:3 New King James Version (NKJV)

3 So you shall speak to all who are gifted artisans, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments, to consecrate him, that he may minister to Me as priest.

When a person is born again they The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Yahweh, but it does not mean that they have the other Six spirits working in them yet. Before I explain this, let’s look at the examples of two churches.

The churches of the Ephesians and the Colossians were among the most faith-filled churches that Paul wrote to. They were born again, and had a reputation for great faith and love. However, Paul writes to these two churches to tell them that he was praying consistently that they would receive the Spirit of Wisdom.

Before praying, Paul starts by assuring the Ephesians that when they believed, they received the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:1-13-14 New International Version (NIV)

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

After assuring the Ephesians that they had the Holy Spirit who was a guarantee of their redemption; the Spirit of Yahweh, the Spirit of Christ. In the very next verse Paul now goes straight to tell them, that they now needed to receive the Spirit of Wisdom.

Ephesians 1:15-17 New King James Version (NKJV)

15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

Paul calls him here, The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation. I believe this revelation is what Isaiah refers to as Understanding. It’s supernatural understanding of hidden things. Paul specifies that it’s Wisdom and Revelation in the KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST.

So after you are born again and are full of the Holy Spirit, there are certain revelations about Christ and his working, that come if you receive the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation. The reason why Paul wanted the Ephesians to receive the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation is so that they can be able to comprehend the mystery of who they are in Christ.

Ephesians 1:18-19 New International Version (NIV)

18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

Without the Spirt of wisdom and understanding, even if Paul was to tell them these things, they will never really understand them so as to be able to actively apply them in their lives.

Let’s go to the Colossians.

Colossians 1:9 New King James Version (NKJV)

9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

Particularly with the Colossians, he prays that they may have the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding in the knowledge of Gods will, so that they may walk in a way that pleases God, that they may bear the good fruit of the Spirit and that, they may increase in knowing God, with patience and long suffering.

LIGHTING THE MENORAH

The Menorah is a vessel that gives light in God’s temple. Your Body is God’s Temple and Your Spirit is God’s Menorah in you.

Now. According to Jewish historical records, the Menorah had a specific way it was and still is being lit. The Centre light is the one that was lit first, and remained lit for all time. In the evening, the priest would take the centre lamp and use it’s light to light the other six.

So when we receive the Holy Spirit for the first time, God lights up the Spirit of Yahweh in us. We begin to manifest the fruit of salvation and redemption. This lamp remains on forever. But now, when Paul is praying for the believers to receive the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation, Jesus the High Priest uses the same Holy Spirit, the Same Lamp of Yahweh that is already burning in us, is the one he uses to light up the flame of wisdom and understanding in our spirits. As we shall see later, with different offices and different gifts among the believers, these are different lights being lit in our spirit.

Jesus Christ had all seven lights lit in his spirit. He moved in all the Seven Spirits of God.

Revelation 5:6 New International Version (NIV)

6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

The Old Testament leaders, each revealed a different aspect of Christ. With the Judges, the first Judge was Moses. Through him we see mainly the manifestation of the Spirit of Yahweh, in delivering Israel from bondage. But after him, he is followed by Joshua, who mainly manifests the Spirit of Wisdom, in claiming God’s Promised inheritance and rest.

Deuteronomy 34:9 New King James Version (NKJV)

9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses

When the Kings were appointed in Israel, David manifested mainly in the Spirit of Yahweh, to deliver Israel from all it’s enemies. After delivering Israel from the hands of their enemies, the next king that came after David was Solomon, who had the lamp of wisdom. Through Solomon, Israel would enter into it’s promise, inheritance and rest.

1 Kings 3:12-13 New International Version (NIV)

12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

Spirit of Counsel and Might

Generally, counselrefers to advice or advisement or plan, and mightrefers to victory, strength, bravery or ability to win battles.

Proverbs 20:18 New King James Version (NKJV)

18 Plans are established by counsel;By wise counsel wage war.

Whenever the Children of Israel needed to go for battle, they were meant to ask the Lord for counsel.

Judges 20:23 New King James Version (NKJV)

23 Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, “Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?”

And the Lord said, “Go up against him.”

So as you can see, counsel is directly related to might. When there is bad or no counsel, there will be no victory in battles. And if there is good counsel, your plans whatever they are will be established.

Proverbs 11:14 New King James Version (NKJV)

14 Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

URIM AND THUMMIM

In the old testament, the counsel of the Yahweh was found via the Urim-Thummim. The Urim and Thummim were part of the breastplate that the High Priest wore.

Exodus 28:30 New Living Translation (NLT)

30 Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the Lord’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the Lord’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the Lord.

The prophets were there in Israel, and their word would give the overall God’s will in relation to the Law. They would announce God’s judgements, rewards and plans. However, when the leader of the Israelites (Judge or King) needed counsel on which decision was best, they were supposed to use the Urim and Thummim.

Numbers 27:21 New Living Translation (NLT)

21 When direction from the Lord is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim—one of the sacred lots cast before the Lord—to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”

David used it all the time. The Urim and Thummim would give a yes or a no answer, a positive and a negative response but if you asked the right questions, you could come up with good counsel from God.

1 Samuel 30:7-8 New International Version (NIV)

Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, “Bring me the ephod.” Abiathar brought it to him,

and David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?”

“Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.”

Here we see a certain wisdom in the way David asks. He asks two questions, ‘shall I pursue?’ and ‘will I overtake?’ As believers we tend to assume that if God gives you the permission to do something, it means you will overcome. Also, ‘Will I overcome’ is different from ‘Can I overcome.’ By Faith all things are possible. So if you ask God, “Can I overcome,” he will say, “Yes.” Because you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you, as long as you believe. But if you ask, “Will I overcome” he can tell you, “No” because you don’t have enough faith. Anyways. let’s see how these things translate to the New Testament.

THE INNER WITNESS

In the New Testament we have Jesus as our high priest, prophet and king. He has also made us kings and priests and he has established prophets in the church. Jesus dwells in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The fact that Aaron was instructed to carry the Urim and Thummim on his heart was symbolic of how God would place his spirit in our hearts as our counsellor.

Galatians 4:6 New International Version (NIV)

6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

John 14:16-17 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.

Among his many works, The Holy Spirit is also given to give counsel to every believer via the inner Urim and Thummim. This inner Urim-Thummim which gives a Yes or No answer to every decision and plan you make, is called The Inner witness or The inner unction.

1 John 2:20 King James Version (KJV)

20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

The word translated ‘unction’ is the greek word Chrisma, which is found only in 1 John 2. It is translated as unction and as the anointing. It should not be confused with the word, Charisma which is translated as gift.

So, while prophecy is great at revealing God’s plans and judgements, our main decisions for all things should be based on the inner counsel of the unction, or anointing. In the old testament, not everyone had access to the Urim-Thurim since it was only found on the High Priest’s chest, so God would also use prophets to give counsel. But in the New Testament, though prophets are needed, we have the anointing, unction as the main source of counsel.

The apostle John continues to tells us concerning this unction/ anointing.

1 John 2:27 New King James Version (NKJV)

27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

We see this in action in the ministry of Paul. When Paul was headed to Jerusalem, all the prophets by the Spirit prophesied that he would be arrested in Jerusalem. And they counselled him to not go so as to avoid imprisonment. However, Paul received their prophecy but rejected their counsel. He chose rather to listen to his inner unction.

Acts 21:10-14 New International Version (NIV)

10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”

12 When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”

After Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem, The Lord Jesus himself then appeared to strengthen him and show him that he done the right thing, and was in the right direction.

Acts 23:11 New International Version (NIV)

11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”

This is the work of counsel and might. Paul was successful in his plans because he had counsel from the Lord primarily via the inner unction.

THE LAMP OF COUNSEL AND MIGHT

But just like all the other lamps. The lamp of counsel and might must be lit in your spirit. After Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians to receive the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, he prays again that they may be strengthened with might that comes from the inner witness/anointing/unction of the Spirit.

Ephesians 3:14-16 New King James Version (NKJV)

14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man 17that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;

Again Paul is praying that the Ephesians receive something that seems to be an automatic given in the life of a Christian. The lamp of counsel and might was still off and needed to be lit in their spirits. He is asking that the believers be strengthened with might that comes from having God’s Spirit in the inner man. He is also praying that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith. How does that happen.

The heart is the birth place of all thoughts, plans and ideas.

Matthew 15:18-19 New International Version (NIV)

18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

The heart is a biblical term to describe the soul and spirit together. This is what we call the inner man. So all thoughts and ideas, good or bad come from the inner man. Now the apostle is praying that God’s spirit empower the inner man. As the spirit of counsel is lit in them and as they follow more the counsel of the inner witness by faith, Christ is being established as ruler in their hearts. Their thoughts and plans become in line with Christ and this then strengthens them in all their work.

Spirit of Knowledge and Fear of Yahweh

Knowledge of God is directly related to the fear of God. A person who fears God, will have knowledge of God and a person who knows God will fear God.

THE LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE

This is what Jesus says:

John 17:3 New King James Version (NKJV)

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Knowledge of God is not intellectual knowledge, but intimate, experiential knowledge that leads you to being transformed into his image. That’s why knowing God is eternal life. A person who has known who God is, will obey God.

1 John 2:3-4 New King James Version (NKJV)

3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Titus 1:16 New King James Version (NKJV)

16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

To obey God, is to walk in love, and to walk in love is to know God. The Spirit of knowledge manifests the love of God to the world. In Paul’s prayer to the Ephesians, he concludes this way:

Ephesians 3:17-19 New King James Version (NKJV)

17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

THE LAMP OF FEAR OF YAHWEH

Knowledge of Yahweh is connected directly to the fear of Yahweh. The fear of Yahweh is manifested by living holy. Holiness refers to separating yourself from things that defile the body, soul or spirit.

2 Corinthians 7:1 World English Bible (WEB)

Having therefore these promises, beloved, let’s cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

How does the fear of God perfect holiness? The fear of God is hatred of those things that God hates. The fear of God, is hatred of anything unclean. The scriptures explain:

Proverbs 8:13 World English Bible (WEB)

13 The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

So the spirit of the fear of Yahweh is the Spirit of holiness, since scripture says that Holiness is made complete in the fear of God, and that the fear of God is hatred of evil. The apostle Paul tells us that Jesus was revealed as the son of God by the resurrection from the dead, through the spirit of Holiness. So this means it was the Spirit of the Fear of Yahweh.

Romans 1:4 New International Version (NIV)

and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[a] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

When we look at the seven spirits listed in Isaiah, the prophet tells us that the Lord Jesus would find delight in the spirit of the Fear of the Lord.

Isaiah 11:2-3 New International Version (NIV)

2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—    the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,    the Spirit of counsel and of might,    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

Conclusion

So these seven lamps, are the seven lights, or the seven glories of God as they are manifested in the human spirit.

  1. Spirit of Yahwehwhich brings deliverance, salvation. This is the Spirit of Christ.
  2. Spirit of Wisdom
  3. Spirit ofUnderstanding
  4. Spirit of Counsel. This works via the inner unction
  5. Spirit ofMight
  6. Spirit of Knowledge.
  7. Spirit of Fear the Lord. This is the spirit of Holiness.
